FIC yet to serve Wontumi on account freeze – Appiah-Kubi

Lawyers for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, have not received any official notice from the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC). Reports claim the FIC has frozen all accounts linked to him and his company, Akonta Mining. This action is due to alleged financial irregularities.

The freeze was reportedly done under Section 56(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020. This law allows the FIC to restrict access to accounts when there is suspicion of illegal activity.

Chairman Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, spoke to Citi News about the situation. He stated they have not received any official documents from the FIC or affected banks.

Appiah-Kubi said, “We just received this communication from my client.” He added that they hope to receive proper documentation soon so they can respond appropriately.

He also mentioned plans to challenge the reported revocation of Akonta Mining's lease in court. Legal documents are being prepared for filing.

“We’re processing the writ,” he explained. “If we’re early enough, we will file it today; otherwise, it will be on Friday.”

Chairman Wontumi and his mining operations face increased scrutiny amid calls for accountability in Ghana's extractive sector.
