Frank Davies slams politicization of Chief Justice removal process

Frank Davies, the Director of Legal Affairs for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed concerns about discussions on Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's potential removal.

On JoyNews' Newsfile, he emphasized that the issue isn't about her removal itself. He stated that the process is constitutionally supported. If citizens have valid reasons for her removal, it should not be a problem.

Davies is more worried about how influential voices are shaping this conversation. He noted that some people are muddying the issues at hand. This distortion is what troubles him most.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has received three petitions regarding Chief Justice Torkornoo's removal. These petitions allege misconduct and abuse of office.

The petitions have been forwarded to the Council of State as required by Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution. Although no decision has been made yet, this marks the start of a constitutional process.

The allegations include claims that Torkornoo advised the President on judicial appointments and made controversial rulings. One such ruling involved the Speaker of Parliament, along with misapplying GH¢75,000.

In response to these allegations, Justice Torkornoo requested copies of the petitions. She submitted her formal response to both the presidency and Council of State before April 7.

The Council of State will evaluate whether there is enough merit in the petitions to form a committee for further investigation.
