Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has criticized the NDC government. He calls their new fuel tax a “Dumsor Levy.” He claims it betrays campaign promises and is worse than the E-Levy.
Dr. Bawumia spoke to party supporters in Cape Coast. This was during his “Thank You Tour” in the Central Region. He accused the NDC of hypocrisy and deception.
“They promised to scrap the E-Levy, and they did,” he said. “But now they’ve introduced a new tax that is eight times worse.” He referred to this as the Dumsor Levy.
The new GH¢1.00 levy on every litre of fuel adds financial strain. Dr. Bawumia explained that buying GH¢1,000 worth of fuel incurs an GH¢83 tax. In contrast, transferring GH¢1,000 under the E-Levy only cost GH¢10.
He warned Ghanaians to expect more taxes ahead. He believes the NDC is pursuing fiscal overreach disguised as economic recovery. “More is yet to come,” he cautioned.
By 2028, he predicts Ghanaians will see this deception clearly. They will then call on the NPP to govern properly again.
In response, Energy Minister John Jinapor defended the new levy. He spoke on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show about its necessity for stabilizing energy costs.
“We couldn’t impose it earlier due to high petroleum prices,” Mr. Jinapor stated. “Now is the right time for action.”
Despite this defense, Dr. Bawumia insists that the government has failed its accountability standards. He argues they have worsened financial hardships instead of alleviating them.
