The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has rejected the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) criticism of the government’s approach to illegal mining, describing it as an attempt to shift blame for their own failures.
Speaking on JoyNews on Wednesday, March 26, Mr. Gbande argued that the NPP's accusations lacked substance and were meant to deflect from its shortcomings in tackling illegal mining between 2016 and 2024.
“The NPP believes that because they failed as a government, the NDC should also fail. But what they don’t realise is that we have a country to build and people to take care of,” he stated.
Mr. Gbande acknowledged the need for a firm government policy against galamsey but stressed that the problem extends beyond political affiliations. He accused the NPP of granting approvals that allowed illegal mining activities in forest reserves.
He urged Ghanaians to be patient, emphasizing that the NDC government, just three months in office, cannot be expected to resolve an issue that persisted for eight years under the previous administration.
