Three Chinese illegal miners were arrested by the Central North Regional Police. This happened in Twifo Denyase, located in the Central Region. Their arrest was part of a police crackdown on illegal mining. The Pra River is already heavily polluted due to these activities.
After their arrest, police recovered two pump-action guns and 22 cartridges. They also seized two excavators and destroyed some chanfang machines used for illegal mining.
DCOP Abraham Acquaye, the Central North Regional Police Commander, spoke at a press briefing. He mentioned that many Ghanaian accomplices fled when police arrived. Some swam across the river to escape capture.
The Chinese suspects tried to evade arrest but were found later at their home. Over four days, police arrested 23 suspects involved in illegal mining. They confiscated six excavators and other heavy equipment during this operation.
Some equipment could not be transported and was destroyed on-site. This was done to prevent further illegal use of the machinery. Despite these efforts, DCOP Acquaye noted challenges faced by the police.
Local political figures and influential individuals have interfered with operations. The command also faces resource constraints, including a lack of bulletproof vests and vehicles. These resources are essential for ensuring officer safety and effectiveness in their work.
