Kwesi Pratt Jr has raised serious concerns about the devastating effects of illegal mining (*galamsey*) on Ghana’s environment and economy.
He highlighted the severe damage caused by these activities, which he links to a 60% decline in cocoa production and growing public health issues.
Pratt also pointed to disturbing medical reports showing birth defects, such as children born without limbs or blind, due to pollution from *galamsey*.
He criticized the previous government, stating that the devastation has led to a lack of clean water in the Western Region, where many water plants have been shut down.
Pratt called attention to the failure of the water authorities to provide potable water due to the contamination caused by illegal mining.
