Ghana joins Burkina Faso to honour Thomas Sankara and fallen heroes

The Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, led a high-level delegation to Burkina Faso yesterday. This visit showed solidarity with the government and people of Burkina Faso.

The delegation attended the inauguration of the Thomas Sankara Memorial Park in Ouagadougou. This park honors Captain Thomas Sankara and twelve others assassinated on October 15, 1987. The memorial features a giant statue and symbolizes reflection and revolution.

Burkinabè authorities spoke at the event, stating that Captain Sankara is "fallen but forever alive in their hearts." They hope the memorial will inspire efforts against oppression, colonial legacies, and terrorism.

During the event, Ghana’s late former President Jerry John Rawlings was posthumously honored. Burkina Faso plans to name a street in Ouagadougou after him for his contributions to Pan-African solidarity.

The Ghanaian delegation included several key figures:
- Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, Minister for Interior and National Security
- Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications
- Lt. Col. Gbevlo Lartey (Rtd), Special Envoy to the Alliance of Sahel States
- Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Chairperson of Parliamentary Committee on Security
- Naval Captain Asaase Gyima (Rtd) and Mr. Kofi Totobi Quakyi, former National Security Coordinators

The delegation engaged in discussions about regional security and cooperation during their visit. They expressed gratitude to Burkina Faso's government and Brigadier General Celestin Simporé for their warm hospitality and partnership throughout the visit.
