Gov't to integrate private SHSs into Free SHS programme to ease pressure on public schools

The government plans to include private senior high schools (SHSs) in the Free SHS programme. This aims to widen access to senior high education. It also seeks to reduce overcrowding in public schools.

Deputy Education Minister Dr. Clement Apaak explained this integration will ease pressure on oversubscribed Category A and B public schools. He mentioned it would help phase out the controversial double-track system.

Dr. Apaak urged parents to be involved in selecting schools for their children. He stressed that this choice is important after completing the BECE exam.

“Parents should take a keen interest in this school selection exercise,” he said.

He clarified the role of school staff in the process. “No head of school or teacher can fill out a selection form without parental consent.” The parent or guardian must sign the form before submission.

“Headteachers and teachers must not fill out BECE candidates’ forms without consent,” he added.

Dr. Apaak also advised parents and guardians to keep a copy of the selection form for their records.
