Governance Advisory Council to promote transparency, accountability - Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama met with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) at the presidency. They discussed forming a Governance Advisory Council. This council is part of his 2024 election campaign pledge. It aims to improve accountability and governance in Ghana.

President Mahama explained the council's role. It will monitor and advise the government on human rights, corruption, and governance issues. He stated, “This council is a commitment to the Ghanaian people.” It promises to create a more transparent and accountable government.

The President believes that civil society can contribute valuable insights. He wants to include religious leaders, traditional authorities, academia, labor groups, and ordinary Ghanaians. Together, they can ensure governance reflects national values and aspirations.

As promised during his campaign, the council will act as an independent watchdog. It will produce an annual report on human rights, corruption, and governance in Ghana. This report will be publicly accessible for government evaluation.

“This annual report will not gather dust,” said President Mahama during his campaign engagements in 2024. “It will hold us accountable on issues like human rights violations and media freedoms.”

Dr. Valerie Sawyerr has been appointed as Senior Presidential Advisor for Governmental Affairs. She will lead efforts to establish the Governance Advisory Council.
