Government will not allocate additional public funds for National Cathedral project - Minister

Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has firmly stated that the Mahama-led administration will not allocate any additional public funds toward completing the controversial National Cathedral project.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Monday, April 8, Mr Kwakye Ofosu said the government estimates the project would require about $400 million to finish—a cost he described as unjustifiable at a time when Ghanaians are demanding improvements in essential infrastructure such as roads, schools, and hospitals.

“This government will not commit additional public funds to the National Cathedral project,” he said. “If churches or private organisations consider it a priority, they are welcome to mobilise their own resources to complete it.”

He noted that the National Cathedral Secretariat no longer exists under the current government. What remains, he said, are outstanding procurement and contractual matters now under the scrutiny of the Office of the Special Prosecutor.

“The Special Prosecutor is reviewing the unresolved issues. If any wrongdoing is uncovered, the necessary legal actions will follow,” he assured.

On the future of the project site, Kwakye Ofosu said no final decision has been made, emphasising the government’s immediate focus is to ensure transparency and accountability in how public funds have been used so far.
