The Mahama government plans to introduce a new bill in Parliament. This bill will rename the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) and other public universities.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu announced this during a ceremony in Accra. CKT-UTAS was established in 2021 to equip students with practical skills. However, it has faced infrastructure challenges that hinder academic development.
The university's name has received mixed reactions from the public. Some stakeholders have opposed it since its inception. The proposed changes are part of a broader initiative to review names of several public universities.
These universities were renamed or established during former President Nana Akufo-Addo's tenure. Haruna stated that extensive consultations have taken place with various groups. These include the academic community, traditional rulers, alumni associations, students, and civil society.
As a result, the name C.K. Tedam University may change back to its original vision. Haruna clarified that renaming is not meant to undermine anyone’s legacy. Instead, it aims to reflect the historical identities of these institutions.
Universities likely affected by this review include the University of Mines and Technology and Abdulai Salifu University. The government will soon table a bill in Parliament for formalizing the renaming process.
