As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares for the 2028 flagbearer race, internal discussions are heating up. Member of Parliament Nana Ayew Afriyie urges party members to focus on unity. He advises them to choose their words carefully to prevent further divisions.
In a Wontumi TV interview with Oheneba Nana Asiedu, Hon. Ayew Afriyie shared insights from the 2024 elections. He warned that careless remarks can be used against them by opponents. During the campaign, opposition parties shared recordings of NPP members criticizing each other.
He emphasized that whether Ken or Bawumia wins, they must be cautious with their words. In the Ashanti Region, opposition parties played recordings of NPP leaders to undermine their efforts. “It was all over,” he noted.
Ayew Afriyie stressed the need for disciplined speech as leaders embark on a post-election “Thank You” tour. He said, “We have to guard our mouth and tongue.”
Meanwhile, former MP Kennedy Agyapong has declared his candidacy for the NPP flagbearer position in 2028. His announcement comes after a violent incident during the party’s “Thank You” tour.
A student was reportedly stabbed by a member of a security team linked to Ali Suraj, an NPP figure. Agyapong expressed concern for his supporters' safety: “If they treat students like this, what will happen to my boys?”
He decided to withdraw from the tour so Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia could continue without distractions. Agyapong stated he informed Dr. Bawumia and the party's General Secretary about his decision, and they supported him.
