The High Court has acquitted and discharged Assin North MP James Gyakye Quayson, bringing finality to a years-long legal battle over his dual citizenship status.

Delivering the ruling on April 9, 2025, the court dismissed all charges against Quayson, who had been accused of holding Canadian citizenship at the time of filing his nomination to contest the 2020 parliamentary elections—an act the prosecution claimed violated the 1992 Constitution.

Quayson, however, consistently maintained that he had renounced his Canadian citizenship before submitting his nomination forms. Following his acquittal, he expressed relief and described the verdict as a “complete vindication.”

With this ruling, Quayson can now continue his parliamentary duties without legal hurdles, ending months of political uncertainty.

While the court has closed the legal chapter, the political significance of the case is expected to linger as Ghana edges closer to the 2028 general elections.
