Haruna Iddrisu vows to end "Schools Under Trees" as Ghana shifts focus to basic education

Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu has announced a plan to improve basic education. He aims to phase out over 5,000 schools that operate under trees.

Speaking at the 21st Annual Education World Forum in London, he called this issue a national concern. The use of makeshift classrooms undermines Ghana’s goal for quality education.

“Despite guarantees of free and compulsory basic education, many children learn under trees,” Mr. Iddrisu said. “This is unacceptable in our modern era.”

He noted that past investments focused on senior high and tertiary education. This often neglected foundational levels of education.

“We are refocusing our efforts to strengthen basic education,” he added.

Mr. Iddrisu highlighted the urgency of the situation. Approximately 400,000 students drop out of school each year. More than half need targeted support to stay in class.

“We cannot lose our children to poverty or lack of infrastructure,” he stated. “Every Ghanaian child deserves a fair chance at lifelong learning.”

He called for global collaboration to improve learning outcomes. He acknowledged ongoing support from international partners like the World Bank.

“Our development partners have been helpful, but we need more support,” he said.

The Education World Forum focused on innovative ways to reform education systems worldwide. Mr. Iddrisu reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to equity and quality in education.

“This is not just a policy shift; it is a moral responsibility,” he concluded.
