He gets up and speaks anyhow – Muntaka tackles Afenyo-Markin

Tempers flared in Ghana’s Parliament on June 3, 2025.

Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, the MP for Asawase and Minister of Interior, confronted Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. He accused Afenyo-Markin of ignoring parliamentary procedures.

“Mr Speaker, this is where my worry is,” Muntaka said, visibly upset. He referred to Standing Order 160, stating it does not allow members to speak freely after a referral.

“You can only go to the committee and make your argument there,” he explained. “When the report comes, that is when you debate it.”

Muntaka claimed Afenyo-Markin often disregards these rules and speaks “anyhow.” He expressed concern about the Minority Leader's behavior.

“But Mr Speaker,” he continued, “the way the Minority Leader is behaving is unacceptable.”

He compared Afenyo-Markin’s conduct to a child throwing a tantrum. “We need to bring him to order,” Muntaka insisted.

“He must understand that this House is governed by rules,” he added.

Muntaka urged the Speaker to ensure that all members follow proper procedures: “Mr Speaker, let us get him to act in order.”
