Dr. Peter Appiahene's appointment to the Electoral Commission (EC) in 2023 has raised serious concerns about his impartiality, given his strong affiliation with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Critics, including civil society organizations, election observers, and members of the public, have questioned his ability to serve neutrally.
The controversy intensified when Dr. Appiahene, during an NIMDEE FM interview, openly supported the controversial e-levy tax and promoted NPP policies like Free SHS and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), while criticizing those of the NDC.
His partisan remarks have led to a petition for his removal, citing violations of constitutional neutrality standards.
The petition, backed by substantial evidence, is now before the President.
