I am not surprised – NPP's Mohammed Awal on CJ’s suspension

President John Dramani Mahama suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo. This happened just five months after he took office. Mohammed Awal, from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), expected this move.

In an interview with Joy Prime’s Roselyn Felli, Awal accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He claimed they are trying to distract Ghanaians from important issues by targeting the Chief Justice.

President Mahama asked the Chief Justice to step aside. This followed a five-member committee's formation to investigate three petitions against her. Myjoyonline.com reports that two more petitions have been filed for her removal.

The Presidency announced the suspension on Tuesday. They stated it was in line with constitutional provisions and after consulting the Council of State.

The President referenced Article 146(6) of the Constitution. This article requires a committee to investigate allegations against a superior court judge if there is enough evidence.

According to the statement, President Mahama found sufficient grounds for further inquiry. However, Awal defended the Chief Justice during his comments.

He expressed suspicion that the NDC government aims to distract from real issues. These include rising electricity tariffs, dumsor, and unresolved galamsey problems.

Awal criticized the NDC's history with judicial matters since the PNDC era. He mentioned past violence against judges as an example of their poor track record.

He recalled that three judges were murdered under PNDC: Justice Sarkodie, Justice Agyapong, and a nursing mother.

Awal also condemned President Mahama for violating due process in this case. He expected proper procedures to be followed before any removal occurred.

He believes this suspension is politically motivated. The President acted despite an application for an injunction at the Supreme Court.

Regarding the petitions, Awal stated that quantity does not matter without evidence of guilt. He emphasized that innocent individuals should remain unaffected by numerous petitions filed against them.
