Gomoa Central MP, Kwame Asare Obeng, known as A-Plus, has apologized. He clarified a misunderstanding linked to accusations against Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine.
At a press briefing on April 30, Dr. Ayine dismissed corruption allegations related to campaign donations. He stated that A-Plus accused him of being corrupt for accepting contributions from businessman Dr. Sledge.
Dr. Ayine firmly rejected this accusation. He argued that receiving campaign support is not corruption. “If receiving donations or a pickup for your campaign is thievery, then there are 276 thieves in Parliament,” he said.
In response, A-Plus posted on Facebook that he never called Dr. Ayine corrupt or a thief. He explained that the Twitter post causing confusion came from a fake account impersonating him.
A-Plus stated, “I have never accused the Attorney General of being corrupt or a thief.” He emphasized that the fraudulent account misrepresented his views and created confusion.
He encouraged Ghanaians to refer to his verified Facebook page for accurate information. His official remarks about the sanitation levy are available there.
Acknowledging his emotional reaction on Facebook, A-Plus admitted it was inappropriate and apologized unreservedly to Dr. Ayine and others affected by his words.
“I could have made my point more respectfully,” he said. He took full responsibility and deleted the controversial post as an act of remorse.
Regarding allegations about the National Service Secretariat (NSS), A-Plus denied any wrongdoing. He stated he did not receive payments from NSS or influence its dealings.
He mentioned meeting someone in November 2024 who sought media support to clear their name but distanced himself from any impropriety related to NSS.
A-Plus highlighted his commitment to supporting public officials facing legal scrutiny, citing past examples like Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson.
He urged Attorney General Dr. Ayine to disclose any evidence against him publicly. “As public servants, we must uphold transparency and accountability together,” he emphasized.
Reaffirming his commitment to fighting corruption, A-Plus called for unity among public officials.
“The fight against corruption is critical for President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC government,” he noted. It’s essential for everyone involved to engage with integrity and respect.
