I paid for everyone’s forms— Wontumi’s grassroots spending raises eyebrows ahead of NPP race

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chairman Wontumi, is in the spotlight again. He is known as the party’s financial backbone. However, his recent statements raise concerns about money's role in politics.

In an interview on Wontumi TV, he made a bold claim. He said, “I paid for all polling station, constituency, and regional forms in 2014 and 2018.” He added that he did the same in 2022 for Ashanti, even for his opponent.

This gesture seems generous but highlights a concentration of power. Financial influence appears to shape the party’s electoral landscape at all levels.

Chairman Wontumi also mentioned funding the party’s 2015 Tamale congress. He reportedly spent one billion old cedis and distributed school supplies across Ghana while the NPP was in opposition.

He insists these actions were without expectations of a government position. He proudly stated, “I’ve never held any government position. I’ve done it all from my own resources.”

His supporters admire him for his investments and loyalty to the party.
