Former Majority Leader and Suame MP, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has revealed that his resignation was influenced by internal party politics and pressure from President Akufo-Addo.
Speaking on Asempa FM, he disclosed that around 80 MPs had warned him about the president’s plan to replace him with Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
Despite backing from colleagues to resist, he chose to step down to avoid deepening party divisions.
He recounted an emergency meeting where Akufo-Addo justified the leadership change, citing the NDC’s growing influence in the Central Region.
With John Mahama likely to pick Naana Opoku-Agyemang as running mate and Ato Forson leading the Minority, the president saw Afenyo-Markin as a strategic counter.
Though many MPs disagreed, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stepped aside to prevent internal turmoil.
