Discussions continue about the 24-hour economy policy proposed by the Mahama administration. An economist has suggested a phased approach. He recommends piloting the initiative in select areas first.
“I was dazed when I heard about the 24-hour economy,” he said on Asaase Radio’s The Forum. He views it as a good initiative but has concerns.
He noted that there is confusion around the policy's clarity and execution. “Today, we don’t know where the bill is. The framework is unclear,” he added.
The economist emphasized the need for an evidence-based rollout. He urged the government to test the program's impact before full implementation. “Pilot it in certain areas and see the effect,” he advised.
Despite these concerns, a government spokesperson stated that rollout has begun. “The program rollout has commenced in earnest,” they said.
The official confirmed that initial deadlines have been met. “We promised to draft legal amendments within 120 days – and we have delivered,” they stated.
According to the government, these legislative amendments will support the 24-hour economy. They aim to enhance social protection and create a better business environment. The spokesperson also mentioned promoting conducive labor relations through these reforms.
