North East Regional Minister, Ibrahim Tia, has recounted his harrowing ordeal after being attacked and held hostage by an angry mob at the Walewale Chief’s palace on Saturday, February 15.
Tensions escalated after the government imposed a curfew following violent clashes. Unhappy with the restrictions, irate youth staged a protest that led to injuries and casualties.
The Minister visited the hospital to check on victims before heading to the Chief’s palace to discuss the situation.
While addressing the Chief, the mob stormed the palace, vandalized his vehicle, and held him captive for over two hours.
A combined military and police team eventually rescued him. The incident underscores rising tensions in the region over the curfew.
