Kennedy Agyapong, former MP for Assin Central, has announced his candidacy. He aims to become the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). This announcement follows a violent incident during the party's “Thank You” tour.
Agyapong withdrew from the tour due to security concerns for his supporters. His decision came after a student was stabbed by a member of Ali Suraj's security detail.
Agyapong expressed concern, saying, “If they treat students like this, what will happen to my boys?” He decided to let Dr. Bawumia continue the tour alone as the former flagbearer.
He informed both Dr. Bawumia and the party’s General Secretary about his decision. They agreed with him on this matter.
“I want justice for the young man who has been stabbed,” Agyapong stated. He emphasized that he would not abandon his followers in times of crisis.
Agyapong then declared his intention to contest again for the NPP leadership. “We have built the party for a very long time,” he said.
This will be Agyapong's second attempt at becoming NPP’s flagbearer. In 2024, he was a close contender against Dr. Bawumia.
Dr. Bawumia received 118,210 votes (61.47%), while Agyapong got 71,996 votes (37.41%). The upcoming NPP primaries are expected to be highly competitive between them.
Agyapong is known for his bold style and strong grassroots support within the party. His renewed ambition sets up another intense leadership race as NPP prepares for the 2028 elections.
