The Institute for Economic Research and Public Policy (IERPP) has called for the dismissal of Ghana’s Energy Minister, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor. They cite gross leadership failure and misinformation regarding a container issue with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The controversy started when the Minister claimed over 1,300 containers were missing. He based this on an internal investigation that found only 1,134 out of 2,491 uncleared containers. This statement caused public outrage and raised concerns about potential corruption.
However, a joint investigative committee contradicted his claims. They reported that 2,637 containers were located at various terminals in Tema Port. This number significantly exceeds the Minister’s initial figures.
The IERPP criticized the Minister's remarks as “reactionary and counterproductive.” They emphasized that misinformation in a struggling sector is damaging and dangerous.
“The energy sector is too vital for political theatrics,” they stated. Ghana deserves leaders who address issues with facts and strategy, not speculation or showmanship.
IERPP believes this incident shows a troubling pattern of mismanagement. They question the integrity and competence of current leadership. The Institute urged President John Dramani Mahama to remove the Minister and appoint someone more capable to lead the sector forward.
