Ibrahim Adjei, a former Assistant Secretary under President Nana Akufo-Addo, has issued a warning. He cautioned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) about misusing state power against the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
His warning follows recent arrests of notable NPP members. These include youth activist Alfred Ababio Kumi, known as Adenta Kumi, and Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, or Chairman Wontumi.
On May 26, during an appearance on Channel One TV's Breakfast Daily, Adjei urged the NDC to act within legal limits. He emphasized that political power is not permanent and should serve the public interest.
“The NDC administration must remember this power is not everlasting,” he said. “You need to work within the law and in the public's interest.”
Adjei also stressed the importance of upholding democracy. He noted that all administrations, including the NPP, should learn from past mistakes.
He mentioned that authorities can question individuals like Adenta Kumi and Chairman Wontumi legally while respecting their rights. His comments came after Kumi’s arrest by National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) operatives last Friday.
Kumi faces charges for allegedly spreading false news on social media. This relates to claims he made about a petition to dissolve a committee investigating the Chief Justice.
Kumi was released after discussions involving security officials and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. Meanwhile, Chairman Wontumi faced scrutiny after a failed arrest attempt at his home on May 23.
The reasons for this operation remain unclear but sparked protests from NPP supporters outside his residence. During this tense situation, Wontumi assured officers he would comply with their invitation.
He is expected to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) soon.
