Traders at the Adum Market in Kumasi, devastated by a recent fire, have expressed regret over their voting decisions as former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia visited the site to assess the damage.
The fire, which broke out last week, destroyed numerous shops and homes, leaving traders counting their losses. As Bawumia toured the wreckage, some affected traders voiced their frustrations, lamenting, "If we had voted for you, this fire wouldn’t have happened!"
Preliminary reports suggest the blaze was caused by faulty electrical wiring, quickly spreading through the market and reducing valuable goods to ashes. The once-bustling commercial hub now lies in ruins, with traders struggling to come to terms with their losses.
Bawumia, addressing the affected traders, assured them of government support and promised immediate relief as well as long-term measures to improve market safety and infrastructure.
"I'm here to share in your pain and assure you that steps will be taken to prevent such tragedies in the future," he stated.
Despite these assurances, many traders remain skeptical, citing past instances where similar promises were made but little action followed. Some voiced concerns about the lack of proactive measures to protect businesses from such disasters.
The fire has reignited discussions on market safety and political accountability, with traders calling for concrete action to prevent future tragedies.
Following the arrival of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at the Kumasi-Adum fire scene today, market women in Kumasi were seen wailing and expressing deep regret for not coming out in large numbers to vote for the former Vice President.
