It’s unconstitutional for ministers-designate to declare their assets after assuming office – Kpebu

Martin Kpebu Martin Kpebu

Private legal practitioner, Lawyer Martin Kpebu, has stressed that it is unconstitutional for ministers-designate to declare their assets after assuming office.

He pointed out that the Constitution mandates public officers to declare their assets before taking office, highlighting that the period between nomination and swearing-in provides an opportunity to complete the declaration.

Kpebu referred to a Supreme Court ruling, which clarified that while ministers can act before being sworn in, they must still fulfill their asset declaration obligations during this interim period.

By emphasizing this legal requirement, Kpebu reinforced the importance of maintaining transparency and integrity in public office from the moment ministers are appointed, calling for adherence to the constitutional framework.
