Timothy Ataboadey Awontirim, a former MP for Builsa North, criticized the recent protest by the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He is also a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
On May 6, 2025, during the Prime Morning Show, he called the demonstration an embarrassment. He believes it was flawed due to misunderstandings of constitutional content.
“The NPP does not understand the constitution,” he stated. “What they did yesterday was embarrassing.”
He noted that Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin struggled while presenting a petition to the Supreme Court. Mr. Awontirim claimed that “not one step has been missed in the constitution.”
He accused the NPP of hypocrisy. They boycotted drafting the 1992 constitution but now act like democracy experts.
Mr. Awontirim highlighted how the NPP undermined state institutions when in power. He said they caused chaos and now preach about democracy.
