John Mahama, the 2024 flagbearer for Ghana’s opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has vowed to reinstate July 1 as a national holiday if elected.
This promise comes in response to President Akufo-Addo’s decision to replace July 1 (Republic Day) with August 4 (Founders' Day).
Mahama accused the current administration of trying to "rewrite history" and emphasized that July 1 is integral to celebrating Ghana’s republic and honoring senior citizens.
He criticized the government's move and pledged to rectify the change, restoring July 1 as a holiday under an NDC government.
