Kwabena Agyapong urges Mahama to defy party pressure and focus on legacy

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyapong, has some advice for President John Dramani Mahama. He urges the President to focus on what is right for the country. This advice comes despite internal political pressures.

In a recent interview on Wontumi TV, Agyapong emphasized legacy over loyalty. He said, “As President, it’s essential to resist pressures and do what’s right.” He warned against being influenced by party loyalists whose interests may not benefit the nation.

Agyapong's comments come amid public scrutiny of the presidency. Ongoing controversies include a petition to remove the Chief Justice. He believes true leadership is tested during tough times when principles must prevail over convenience.

President Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to integrity and transparency in governance. During a national address marking his first 120 days in office, he discussed his anti-corruption efforts.

He described his approach as two-pronged: recovering misappropriated funds from past officials and holding current appointees accountable. “My commitment to fighting corruption goes beyond recovering loot,” Mahama stated.

He also addressed concerns about public officials buying state assets. His government’s new code of conduct explicitly forbids such practices.

“Public trust has been eroded because appointees have always purchased state assets after serving,” he noted. The President assured Ghanaians that this policy prevents any acquisition of public property by serving officials.
