Kwasi Prempeh is playing games with the public’s mind – Martin Amidu

Former Attorney General Martin Amidu has criticized Henry Kwasi Prempeh. Prempeh is the Chair of the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC). Amidu accuses him of promoting a politically motivated agenda disguised as reform.

In an open letter to MyNewsGH, Amidu expressed concerns about Prempeh's comments. He noted that the event where these remarks were made was not politically neutral. Organizations like IEA and CDD-Ghana facilitated this event.

Amidu described these organizations as "comprador NGOs." He believes they work with political elites for power. Their goal is to serve foreign interests in global geopolitical struggles.

The controversy began with Prempeh’s comments on May 3, 2025. He spoke during a public discussion reported by Joy FM. He addressed calls for abolishing the Council of State.

Prempeh stated that simply calling for abolition is insufficient. He suggested a middle-ground approach: “retain, but modify.”

Joy FM summarized his views on the Council’s limited impact. He cited issues like opaque operations and excessive presidential influence.

Prempeh proposed reforms for a more transparent structure and revised composition. He also suggested granting the Council binding advisory roles in some areas.

However, Amidu sees this as an attempt to sway public opinion. He believes it could lead to constitutional amendments with long-term effects.

Amidu warned that Prempeh may be misleading the public. Abolishing the Council of State would require further amendments to the Constitution.

He cautioned that pursuing such reforms through a referendum could backfire on the NDC. “The NDC cannot win at any future referendum,” he said, highlighting potential consequences for their 2028 election ambitions.
