Tensions are rising in the Eastern Region. This follows the rejection of the President’s nominee for Abuakwa South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE). The Akyem Abuakwa Council of Zongo Chiefs and youth groups led this rejection.
At a press conference in Kyebi, community leaders expressed their outrage. They criticized the selection of Nana Addo Aikins Jnr. They called it a betrayal of loyal National Democratic Congress (NDC) members.
Chief Alhaji Abubakar Umar, the Kyebi Zongo Chief, spoke out against the nomination. He described it as “a stab in the back” to supportive Zongo communities. “We have stood by the party for decades,” he said, visibly emotional.
The community is particularly upset about Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed's exclusion. He is a respected NDC figure and long-time supporter from the Zongo community. Many expected him to be chosen for the MCE position.
“This is not just about Sanusi Mohammed,” said Abdul Raman Kafando, a youth group leader. He emphasized that this issue reflects ongoing marginalization of Zongo people within the party. Kafando warned that ignoring these concerns could lead to political consequences with elections approaching.
Despite their frustration, Chief Umar urged calm among the youth. He encouraged them to express their grievances peacefully. “We are angry but disciplined,” he stated. “Let our voices be heard through lawful means.”
