Let's end bastardisation of predecessor governments - Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, wants political blame to stop. He calls for a national reconciliation system to strengthen Ghana’s democracy.

On Adom TV’s Badwam on May 6, he criticized the ongoing political culture. Incoming governments often attack their predecessors. He described this as a "vicious cycle" that harms national unity.

“When will this vicious cycle end? No government can be perfect,” Afenyo-Markin said.

He noted that new governments focus on criticizing past administrations instead of governing. “Whenever a party assumes power, it criticizes the previous government,” he stated.

Afenyo-Markin urged for a formal structure to promote reconciliation. “Can’t we have a system in place to reconcile?” he asked.

He emphasized that changes in government come from public dissatisfaction. However, Ghana must learn from its past mistakes. “Let’s not repeat the negatives affecting our democracy since 1992,” he cautioned.

The Minority Leader also criticized the current government's approach to governance. He called the ongoing political "reset" negative and exclusive. “The reset should promote reconciliation and include everyone,” he argued.

Regarding economic issues, he expressed concern for local businesses. “Ghanaian businesses feel less secure than foreign-owned ones,” he noted after speaking with businessmen.

Reflecting on his party's electoral defeat, Afenyo-Markin acknowledged their shortcomings. “We are not in government because we failed ordinary Ghanaians’ expectations,” he said.

He criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for its performance so far. He rated their first 120 days in office at under 20%. “I would give them 20% only because I am a private sector operator,” he concluded.
