Let’s see evidence of how fuel levy is used – Dr Ishmael Yamson

Dr. Ishmael Yamson, Chairman of the National Economic Dialogue Committee, has urged the government to be transparent. He wants strict management of the new GH₵1 per litre fuel levy. He warned that public unrest may grow if Ghanaians see no evidence of proper use.

Dr. Yamson spoke to journalists after presenting the 2025 National Economic Dialogue Report to President John Mahama. He acknowledged the need for the levy due to Ghana’s rising energy sector debt. However, he emphasized that accountability is key for public trust and cooperation.

“I personally do not have problems with it,” he stated. The president mentioned a need for $5 billion, which the government currently lacks. This debt has accumulated over time, and current needs must also be addressed.

He noted that no external help will solve Ghana’s economic issues. “Nobody will build Ghana for us; we must do it ourselves,” he said.

Dr. Yamson highlighted that the success of the levy depends on government transparency. He expressed concern about how funds will be used and stressed that they should be audited.

He warned that failing to deliver on promises would increase mistrust among Ghanaians. “If he does that, I assure you Ghanaians will show goodwill,” he said.

The GH₵1 fuel levy was introduced through the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Bill, 2025. It has sparked debate over its urgency and potential misuse. Dr. Yamson's call reflects growing demands for transparency in managing public funds during Ghana’s economic recovery efforts.
