Fifi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is calling for constitutional reforms. He wants to separate parliamentary duties from ministerial appointments.
In an interview on Channel One TV, Kwetey shared his concerns. He noted that many people run for Parliament just to become ministers. This trend undermines true legislative service.
Kwetey emphasized that serving the people should be the main goal. He stated, “Don’t come telling me that I came to Parliament hoping for a ministerial appointment.” He believes ministerial roles should be seen as a bonus.
He insists that constitutional changes are necessary. “We need to decouple this business about being in Parliament and becoming a government member,” he said. This would help ensure we have genuine parliamentarians.
Kwetey also criticized the current system for misleading voters. Political aspirants often run for Parliament with hidden agendas for executive positions. “You cannot use MPship to deceive the people,” he stated.
He urged lawmakers to focus on legislation instead of seeking ministerial roles. “Go in there, legislate,” he advised, stressing the need for independence in Parliament.
Finally, Kwetey highlighted that Parliament should check government power effectively. He concluded by asking politicians to tone down their disappointments regarding governance issues.
