MPs shocked by poor conditions in Accra shelter homes

The Parliamentary Committee on Gender, Children, and Social Welfare has started a week-long inspection of orphanages and shelter homes in Accra. Their goal is to assess the welfare of vulnerable children and improve national care policies.

The committee is led by Hon. Helen Adjoa Ntoso, MP for Krachi West. They began their tour at the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection. They also visited Save Them Young Homes, New Life Nungua Children’s Home, and Great Mission International.

During these visits, caregivers expressed years of frustration. Many highlighted the challenges faced by children with special needs. These children often lack access to basic education or vocational training.

Caregivers also reported neglected healthcare for children with chronic illnesses, disabilities, and autism. Nii Afotey Bortey II, founder of New Life Nungua Children’s Home, called for inclusive development. He urged government institutions to involve shelter children in national sports and talent programs.

Hon. Ntoso was disturbed by what she saw during the inspections. She promised to present a detailed report to Parliament with recommendations for immediate reforms.

“We cannot continue to fail these children,” she said. “It is our duty to ensure they are safe and nurtured.”

She also urged the Department of Social Welfare to address overcrowding in facilities and improve care standards.
