Mahama: Accra overstretched, new city needed to ease burden

President John Dramani Mahama has called for a new city. He believes this will help reduce congestion in Accra. Rapid urbanization, traffic gridlock, and poor infrastructure are major issues.

"Accra is overstretched," Mahama said. "The capital faces pressure from urbanization and inadequate infrastructure." He emphasized the need for long-term planning to ease these burdens.

Mahama spoke during his Greater Accra 'Thank You Tour' on May 16. He first proposed the idea in 2024. This included a feasibility study for a new city outside Accra.

The new city would serve as a secondary hub for administration and commerce. It aims to decongest the capital by relocating some government offices and financial institutions.

Mahama envisions the city covering parts of Greater Accra, Eastern, and Volta regions. It would be near Volta Lake and designed as a green, digital metropolis. The plan includes industrial parks, financial services, and tourist attractions operating around the clock.
