There are strong indications that Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, may be appointed as the Majority Leader in the 9th Parliament to replace Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who has been nominated as the Minister of Finance.

Dr. Forson, the current Majority Leader, was vetted by the Appointments Committee on Monday, and if approved, he will not be able to hold both positions.

Consequently, the NDC caucus in Parliament will need a new leader. Ayariga’s name has emerged as a likely successor, with the NDC leadership currently considering his nomination. Previously, Haruna Iddrisu led the NDC caucus until January 2023.

Ayariga, a lawyer and politician, served as Minister of Information and Youth and Sports under President John Mahama. He has also represented Bawku Central since 2012, having first won the seat in 2005.
