Mahama: VRA bosses will be sacked if Akosombo Dam flooding recurs

President John Dramani Mahama has warned the Volta River Authority (VRA) leadership. He stated that if flooding from the Akosombo Dam happens again, they will resign or be dismissed.

Mahama delivered this message during a national address on May 7. This address marked his administration's first 120 days in office. He discussed ongoing efforts to prevent future disasters.

A technical committee is investigating the 2023 incident. It is chaired by former VRA Chief Executive Ing. Kirk Koffi. The committee will recommend long-term strategies for flood mitigation.

Mahama mentioned that the committee suggested a controlled spill flood plan. They also proposed downstream engineering solutions for better flood management.

He emphasized the need to act on these recommendations quickly. “I have directed that the recommendations be implemented immediately,” he said.

The President made it clear that VRA leadership must be accountable. If another destructive flooding occurs, they must resign or be sacked.

The 2023 spillage caused severe damage in downstream communities. Thousands of residents were displaced, leading to criticism over planning and emergency preparedness.

With this directive, Mahama aims to enforce stricter oversight of Ghana’s hydroelectric infrastructure. This comes amid increasing climate-related risks in the country.
