Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, a former Minister of Trade and Industry, praised Ghana's recent economic gains. He attributes these improvements to “honest and accountable leadership” under President John Dramani Mahama.
In his statement titled “The Great NDC and Ghana under a Great President Make Ghana Shine Again,” he highlighted a positive economic turnaround. He referenced recent reports from the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and other indicators.
Spio-Garbrah believes these achievements stem from strategic decisions made by the current administration. He noted that financial losses during the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government were due to systemic corruption. He claims this corruption has significantly decreased under the current government.
He stated, “The excellent results announced by the BoG are a testament to the President's integrity.” He congratulated all Ghanaians, especially President Mahama, the Finance Minister, and others for their roles in restoring economic stability.
In his full statement, he outlined several reasons for the positive results:
- Ghanaians elected a more honest President on December 7 last year.
- President Mahama set a strict 120-day deadline for key targets.
- There was quick nomination and vetting of appointees.
- The new NDC appointees made better decisions.
- Coordination improved between the Finance Minister and BoG Governor.
- The creation of GoldBod focused on gold exports effectively.
- Government officials behaved more honestly and accountably.
- Global market conditions for gold and cocoa were favorable.
- There was less blatant stealing by government officials.
He emphasized that reduced corruption was crucial in addressing losses at COCOBOD and in gold trade. Spio-Garbrah concluded with congratulations to all Ghanaians, particularly key leaders involved in this progress.
