The government is committed to clearing debts in the energy sector. Substantial payments will be made by late 2025 or early 2026.
President John Dramani Mahama spoke at the Africa CEO Summit in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. He expressed concern over the sector's rising liabilities, currently at GH¢80 billion.
The government is engaging stakeholders to address arrears owed to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and other service providers. This effort aims to sustain energy production and prevent disruptions.
“The energy sector has been our top priority,” said President Mahama. “When I returned, we found a troubled energy sector with debts of nearly GH¢2.5 billion.”
He added that they are continuing efforts started by the previous government. They are renegotiating the debt and developing strategies to manage it.
“By the end of this year or early next year, we hope to resolve this debt,” he stated.
