Mahama suspends Chief Justice Torkornoo

President John Dramani Mahama has suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo. This follows a prima facie case from three petitions seeking her removal. The suspension was announced on Tuesday, April 22.

The action is in line with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution. It was taken after consulting the Council of State. This marks a significant moment in Ghana's legal history.

Chief Justice Torkornoo received copies of the petitions earlier this month. She responded in writing by April 7. After reviewing her response, President Mahama decided further investigation was needed.

A five-member committee has been formed to lead the inquiry. The panel includes:

- Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, Supreme Court Justice – Chairman
- Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu Asiedu, Supreme Court Justice – Member
- Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Former Auditor-General – Member
- Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo, Ghana Armed Forces – Member
- Professor James Sefah Dzisah, Associate Professor, University of Ghana – Member

Under Article 146(10), President Mahama issued a warrant for her immediate suspension. This will remain until the committee completes its investigation.
