President John Dramani Mahama has announced a plan to ban styrofoam plastics in Ghana. He cited their role in environmental pollution as a major concern.
During his Thank You tour, he spoke about the dangers of styrofoam disposal. He noted that people often dump food packaging after eating. “That is one of the biggest polluters,” he said.
Mahama mentioned that his government will enforce a nationwide ban soon. The Ministry of Environment will collaborate on this effort. Alternatives like paper and aluminum foil will be promoted for food packaging.
His serious message on sanitation brought laughter from the crowd. While reading his speech, he paused and joked about sounding familiar. He referenced former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s COVID-19 addresses.
With a smile, he corrected himself: “Okay, fellow citizens.” This lighthearted moment added humor to an urgent topic. It showed Mahama's commitment to environmental issues while playfully addressing his predecessor.
