The African Electoral Institute (AEI) has supported the reported withdrawal of military security from Electoral Commission Chair Jean Mensa, describing the heavy security presence as unnecessary.
In a statement, AEI argued that the EC’s role is civil and non-combative, making military protection unwarranted. The institute questioned why such security was needed in the first place, emphasizing that the EC is not at war.
Instead, AEI recommends a civilian security detail similar to what past EC chairs had.
The organization urged the EC to focus on ensuring transparent and credible elections rather than maintaining military protection.
AEI reaffirmed its commitment to electoral integrity and stakeholder participation across Africa.
