Majority distances itself from YEA-Zoomlion sanitation contract dispute

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Majority Caucus in Parliament has made a clarification. They have not authorized the Parliamentary Sanitation Committee to interfere with the Youth Employment Agency's (YEA) sanitation contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

In a statement, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga emphasized this point. He stated that no member of the Sanitation Committee has been given permission to intervene in YEA’s contracts.

Ayariga mentioned that the Committee Chairman reported no attempts to interfere with YEA's work on the Zoomlion contract. He urged everyone to disregard comments from individual committee members defending Zoomlion’s contract. These remarks do not represent the official position of the Committee or Parliament.

The Majority Leader also advised Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to resist any pressure regarding sanitation agreements. He reminded them that Parliament had previously ensured 80% of the District Assemblies Common Fund was disbursed directly to them.

This move grants MMDAs more autonomy over their development priorities. Ayariga reiterated Parliament’s commitment to supporting local authorities' independence and warned against undue influence in their decisions.
