Minority Caucus criticises Foreign Minister over his handling of Washington embassy scandal

The Minority Caucus on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee has concerns. They are worried about the Foreign Minister's communication strategy. This relates to the recent closure of Ghana’s embassy in Washington, D.C.

Samuel Abdulai Jinapor spoke for the Caucus. He is a former Lands Minister and committee spokesperson. He clarified that their concern is not just about closing the embassy.

They are also troubled by how and when this information was shared. The Minority believes the Foreign Minister did not consult the committee before announcing it. They called this move premature and harmful to Ghana’s diplomatic image.

Jinapor stated, “The announcement should have been handled with greater tact.” He emphasized that sensitive foreign policy decisions need careful communication. Institutional collaboration is essential, rather than unilateral declarations.

The Minority Caucus wants better coordination between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Parliament. This is especially important for matters with significant international implications. They warned against “populist grandstanding” and urged strategic engagement over headline-driven governance.
