Minority MPs resume parliamentary duties after protest over Wontumi’s GH₵50m bail

The Minority Caucus in Parliament returned to the House on Friday, May 30, 2025. This followed a brief boycott protesting bail conditions for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.

Wontumi was arrested on Tuesday, May 27, by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). He was granted bail set at GH₵50 million. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its allies condemned this amount as excessive and politically motivated.

On Thursday, May 29, Minority MPs walked out of Parliament. They were led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. He called the bail terms unfair and stated they could not meet such conditions.

“We don’t have GH₵50 million,” he said. “Where is he going to get it from? They must do the right thing.” He added that they would not participate in proceedings until then.

Afenyo-Markin also expressed support for Wontumi. “We will stand with him,” he said. “If it means we have to spend nights with him, we will do so.”

In a surprising turn, the Minority Caucus returned to the House the next day. They actively participated in proceedings without explaining their change of heart. This suggests possible behind-the-scenes discussions or reassurances that eased tensions.

Meanwhile, Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai confirmed on Thursday that Wontumi is under investigation. His official Facebook post mentioned several serious offences against him.

These include fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering. EOCO is leading this investigation and has started asset recovery efforts related to suspected proceeds of crime.
