On Thursday, the Minority in Parliament staged a walkout. They marched to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) offices. Their goal was to demand the release of Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. He is the Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party Chairman.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin led the group. They expressed concern over Mr. Boasiako's continued detention. He has reportedly been held in EOCO custody for not meeting bail conditions.
The MPs chanted slogans and held placards during their march. They gathered at EOCO’s headquarters in Accra. They called on EOCO to clarify Wontumi’s detention circumstances and respect his rights.
Afenyo-Markin spoke to reporters about their concerns. “We want to know where our brother is,” he said. “This is about the rule of law for all Ghanaians.”
The demonstration caught the attention of EOCO officials. However, no formal statement was issued by the agency at that time.
Mr. Boasiako is a prominent figure within the NPP and under investigation. Details of his case remain unclear, but his prolonged custody has sparked political tensions.
Supporters and opposition members in Parliament have criticized this situation. The Minority has vowed to push for transparency and justice in this matter. They are calling on civil society and legal advocacy groups to ensure due process is followed.
