Minority returns to Parliament despite earlier boycott threat

The Minority in Parliament returned today, May 30, 2025. This is despite their earlier decision to boycott proceedings. They had planned to stay away until the release of Chairman Wontumi.

Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, is currently detained. He faces allegations of fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. The Minority staged a walkout on Thursday and protested at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Mr. Sammy Awuku represents Akuapem North Constituency. He confirmed the Minority's return and mentioned future plans would be revealed in Parliament today.

Tensions within the party have increased due to Wontumi's arrest. He has a bail condition set at GH¢50 million. Some MPs accuse EOCO of political persecution.

The Deputy Attorney-General clarified that this case involves serious criminal investigations. These investigations have both local and international aspects.

Political watchers are closely observing Parliament for the Minority’s next move in this situation.
