Minority walks out of Parliament, heads to EOCO to demand Wontumi’s release

The Minority Caucus left Parliament on Thursday. They protested the arrest of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.

The minority group went to the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO). They demanded the release of Wontumi, a prominent politician.

Wontumi spent a second night in custody at EOCO headquarters in Accra. This was on Wednesday, May 28. He had been granted bail of GH¢50 million with two sureties.

However, his legal team could not secure the required sureties. His lawyer, Andy Appiah Kubi, stated that Wontumi is cooperating fully with the investigation.

Kubi said they are working to meet the bail conditions soon. “This is part of an ongoing police inquiry,” he told journalists.

Wontumi was arrested on May 27 after visiting the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). He faced questioning over allegations of illegal mining, known as galamsey.

He is now under investigation by EOCO for allegedly causing financial loss to the state.
